Why kids love it

It works the same night.

Most favours get opened in the car and forgotten by dinner. This one needs a dark room, which means it comes out at bedtime — and then it is on the ceiling every night for a month.

A picture a foot wide

Hold it a metre from the wall and the image fills a dinner plate. Closer for sharp and small, further back for big and soft — working that out is half the fun.

Twenty-four pictures

Three discs, eight frames each. Turn the wheel with a thumb and the picture changes with a click, so there is a whole sequence to get through rather than one trick.

It is a bedtime toy

Quiet, no screen, needs the lights off. Parents tell us this is the one they do not mind being played with at 8pm.

What is in the box

One torch, three discs.

Body colour is the only thing that varies. Every box has the same three discs inside.

It runs on a button cell.

Sourced from a verified maker. This torch is powered by a button cell battery, and that is the most important thing on this page. A swallowed button cell can cause serious internal injury within hours, so the battery compartment stays shut, spare cells never come out of the packet, and if you ever think a child has swallowed one, go to A&E immediately — do not wait for symptoms. For that reason this is a gift for ages 3 and up, handed over by an adult, not dropped into a bag for a toddler.

It is also a light. Bright enough to throw a picture across a room, which means it is not to be shone into anyone’s eyes. The discs are easy to handle but easy to lose, so they live in the box.
